Reading's Madejski Stadium, close to Junction 11 of the M4, might be well known as a centre of sporting excellence, but it also boasts an international hotel and fine-dining restaurant, Cilantro. Head chef Denzil Newton's passion is for turning simple, fresh, seasonal, UK-sourced ingredients into delicious and exquisitely presented dishes - a skill refined whilst working for such renowned establishments as The Ritz and The Ivy. He keeps in close contact with some of the UK's finest suppliers - sourcing fresh fish from Brixham and beef from Scotland for example - and changes the menus on a regular basis to reflect what is in season and at its best.
Denzil also believes that dining should not just be about consuming a few dishes, but rather enjoying a development of tastes. The two and three-course menus, at £36 and £47 respectively, provide dishes interspersed with delicate canapés, soup cappuccino, sorbet and a light pre-dessert. Also available is a seven-course menu gourmand at £49.50. Sample dishes on the current menu include pan-fried Lyme Bay scallops with homemade black pudding and citrus sauce, medallions of Cornish lamb with umble pie and artichoke barigoule, and trio of rhubarb and Champagne with mousse, tart and sorbet. The fully comprehensive wine list offers a well-rounded selection, with prices varying between £15.95 and £250.
The hotel comprises 201 en-suite rooms, two purpose built, fully equipped meeting rooms, full leisure facilities, two restaurants and a spacious bar area. The Millennium Madejski Hotel is home to Reading Football Club and London Irish Rugby Football Club, with match-day dining and accommodation available.
